Bone Density

Bone density refers to the strength of bones and their likelihood to break/fracture. It is vitally important that as we age, bone density is not overlooked. When bone density is severe enough it is referred to as Osteoporosis.

Why is bone density or Osteoporosis important?

Many people ask “So what if I get a fracture. Can’t you just put a cast on it?”

It is true that certain bones can be casted but hip fractures usually require surgery. Studies show that in elderly patients that fracture a hip, 80% will die within five years and 20% will die within twelve months.

In the US, 50% of women over the age of 65 years will have a spinal vertebral fracture that can result in lifelong pain.

This is why it is imperative that Osteoporosis not be overlooked.

Osteoporosis or low bone density is diagnosed with a quick and painless X-ray called a DEXA that measures a patients bone mineral density (BMD).

The answer is complex and starts with conservative measures such as nutrition and lifestyle changes. More severe cases require medication. Here at Surfside Primary Care Medicine we provide full spectrum care for Osteoporosis including cutting edge medications such as Prolia®, Evenity®, and Tymlos®.

Supplements and herbals have a definitive place in early prevention and treatment of thinning bones as dose hormonal treatment in the appropriate patient. Often, Osteoporosis or low bone density is missed because it does not cause pain or symptoms until a fracture. At this point supplements by themselves are not sufficient.
