Colds and Flu are widely known to everyone and are caused by a wide variety of pathogens such as the bacteria Strep causing some sore throats and viruses like Influenza and Covid-19 causing upper respiratory infections. Fungus and parasites can also cause a variety of infections treated by a Primary Care healthcare worker.

Can you test for common infections in the office?

Along with using bloodwork, some infections can be tested for immediately in the office using such tools as a Rapid Strep test, Rapid Flu test, or a rapid Covid-19 test.

Are there ways to support the immune system naturally?

Absolutely. There are many options including herbs and supplements, foods and lifestyle modifications that bolster your immune system. Here at Surfside Primary Care Medicine we endeavor to use all tools available to optimize our patients health and decrease our reliance on pharmaceutical medication.

Sometimes I dont get antibiotics when Im sick. Why?

Antibiotics typically only treat bacterial infection and some infections like inner ear infections are often caused by viruses which are not treated by antibiotics. Since antibiotics kill good bacteria in the gut which is a large component of your immune system, it is not always a given that you will get antibiotics with every infection. Careful history, physical exam and sometimes lab work and X-rays will help direct the optimal care for a patient.
